colors, quotes and Q&A

Ok, so when's the last time you visited the color and quote page (and archive) at Big Picture Scrapbooking?
Color62908

I ask simply because it's pretty cool and could potentially provide you with some needed inspiration!
I LOVE it.

So, I'm back with some Q&A for you. As you may or may not know, I've made some adjustments to the way I handle incoming email, which I'm sure you know can be a real time and energy sucker (I love getting email and email is NOT a bad thing necessarily, but as I've paid attention to what takes up my time and what drains my energy there is a direct correlation to the number of messages in my inbox) When there are things you are itching to do and you can't seem to make time for them, you often need to do some eliminating. Luckily I have two partners that totally get me and want to help me and they are -- thanks Paula and Kayce! Rather than respond to email questions personally, I'm going to address them on my blog (unless of course someone asks me not to. In these cases, I will respond in private) so, anyway here goes ...

Q: I finished Photo Freedom recently and I'm working on taking the plunge into better photo organization – my hangup?  I don’t upload and print photos.  Is this a necessary thing for the tangible ability to flip through the storage binders??  Or couldn’t I use photo tags in my photo organizing computer program that will allow me to ‘virtually label’ my ‘keeper photos’ both chronologically and using ‘category drawer’ labels and THEN print the ones I want to scrapbook when I’m ready?

A: So, this is a really good and important question and a good place for me to say that I will always give you my hard-earned opinion because I want you to know what I have learned through years of trial and error. Obviously, you can and should do your own testing and tweaking of this system until you reach an adaptation that works for you. Ok, here's the deal (hard-earned opinion) YOU CAN'T SCRAPBOOK PHOTOS YOU CAN'T SEE (and touch) If you are a traditional scrapbooker (at least some of the time) I believe you must have a stockpile of printed photos that you can see and review over and over again. Yes, you can see photos on your computer and yes you can print photos when you are ready, BUT (and I think it's a huge but) there is something magical in having printed photos in viewable albums that you can flip through again and again and again. It is in the very act of flipping through binders that these images are seared into your brain so that a subconscious prioritizing can occur. Without really being aware of it, you will, with storage binders in place, scrapbook those memories/pictures that are MOST important or most telling over time. You will in the physical viewing and triaging of your binders make connections that can only be made when you can flip back and forth and pull and sort by category, etc. etc.  As you deplete pictures in these binders there is also a wonderful sense of accomplishment and absolute feeling that you are making progress and that is critical. Now, if you are digital scrapbooker you clearly do not need as many physical prints available to you. NOTE I said "as many" -- I still whole heartedly believe that your family deserves to have at least a limited selection of printed pictures available to them, while they wait for you to get them scrapbooked. Frankly, our families don't really care if pictures end up on pages or in mini books or printed photo books or just storage binders. What they want to see are the pictures you are constantly snapping -- and trust me, if they get to see them, they'll be much more willing as photo subjects. I think digital scrapbookers should still print 5 to 10% of the pictures they take and either put them into storage binders to include in a physical project here and there -- or simply slip them into photo albums to be enjoyed right away.

I know this is long, but I have one final thought on this issue. I don't know about you, but when I get the urge to engage in the creative  process of assembling a page, my urge is fragile. If I have to sit down at my computer and scroll through pictures and potentially edit and determine the size I want the pictures to be (based on a  potential sketch I may not have selected yet) my energy would go right out the window. If on the other hand, I can come downstairs and in a matter of minutes put my hands of prints and begin to play -- I am productive (meaning, I can in fact make a page) and I go to bed feeling refreshed and I wake up happy and eager to run back downstairs and look at my completed page and I have a sense of renewed energy for the day at hand. I cannot tell you how often this happens for me and how often I need this to happen for me, so that I can sustain the work that I do.

Before you weigh in on the issue of "to print or not to print" ask yourself this very important question:
Are you scrapbooking as often as you'd like to?
If the answer is NO.
Try implementing the idea of storage binders (with just one season's worth of pictures) and see if it makes a difference for you.

and ... have a wonderful Monday.

go fourth and celebrate ...

I re-read my last post and thought it sounded rather negative -- I've been working a bit too hard lately. The balance has been off but I'm working, with the help of my wonderful BPS team to make adjustments so I can focus my efforts on the things that matter most and the projects I most want to be a part of.
Asking you to post comments about America was kind of a fluke (so I could give away the Scenic Route kit) HOWEVER, as I read through your comments about this great nation of ours, I was reminded how powerful words are -- especially when they are shared in an effort to express gratitude. Your collective thoughts gave me the chance to tweak my attitude and remember how totally cool it is that I (and you) have the freedom to pursue our passions and start businesses and build communities and learn and grow and contribute and WORK HARD -- WOW. Seriously. Wow.

Even if you read just a dozen or so of the comments left over the last two days, you'll see what I mean.

Time flies. Spend five minutes today thinking about last year. Where were you, what did you do and who did you do it with? What will be the same this year and what will be different? Why?

stayed home this year. loved it -- watched the very low-key Liberty Lake parade which consists of mostly patriotic golf carts and kids throwing candy.

Happy 4th of July -- off to watch the fireworks.

I realize that I have not posted ...

in a long while, but my email inbox only has 7 messages in it (this has NEVER happened) and I am officially ready to Have More FUN!

I was basically down to the wire and had to GET MY WORK done, so I could PLAY (Yeah!!)

I just want you all to know that I will NEVER (I'm clearly on a superlative kick today) be teaching this class again. Not that it isn't a great class -- it is. I've just learned for myself that I am not able to do back to back workshops that are 12 weeks long-- and maintain a life that I can endure. I am absolutely committed to teaching Library of Memories every year and so that comes first. We might at some point re-purpose some of the More FUN content -- say the photo album scrapbooking stuff, but just so you know, if you are sitting on the fence about this class, we are going to have a BLAST and I will not be one of the experts next year. This is your one and only chance to take Have More FUN the way I envisioned it.

As a side NOTE: You will be glad to know that both Allison Tyler Jones and Wendy Smedley are considering a second run in 2009. If there are other "experts" you want to learn from, please email us and let us know!

So ... in case you hadn't heard, CKMedia is working on a brand new super-cool website that will be launching next week. This is such GREAT news because there is so much wonderful content to be explored between the four magazines and so much opportunity for community and connection that I'm just really excited to see it happen! For those of you, like me, that primarily visit and use SimpleScrapbooksmag.com you will still be able to, but you will also have access to a brand new community site at CreatingKeepsakes.com: A community for scrapbookers and paper crafters. Here's a short list of things we'll be able to do on the new CK site:

Connect with other scrapbookers and paper crafters in a community dedicated to your hobbies.
Be inspired by beautiful galleries and projects.
Join groups that speak to your individual interests.
Create your own blogs.
Access the widest variety of project inspiration available.
Learn from the experts at all four CKMedia titles.
Upload your own video and share them in our video gallery.
Enter contests for your chance to win fabulous prizes.
Learn what the magazines are looking to publish and submit your own work.
Find exactly what you’re looking for using our enhanced search capabilities.

Sounds good to me -- watch your inbox for the announcement!

Now, all of these changes mean that my little summer gallery challenge that we announced in the July/August issue isn't unfolding quite as we had planned. I've had a few emails about this and I am so sorry if you have been looking for it!  I'm going to start posting my layouts here and will keep you posted as to where you can upload your pages once the new galleries are up and running.

A Call to HELP!

If you looking for flip flops to wear on the first day of Have More FUN, I think you should consider these, from Little Missmatched ...

As you may know, there is some serious flooding going on in IOWA.

In fact, the LMM warehouse is right smack in the middle of it all.
All my favorite socks are high and dry, but that is NOT the case for many, many people and their belongings. There is a way we can help. LMM is donating 10% of totals sales to The Clayton County Disaster Recovery Committee, a non profit organization where 100% of donations benefit those in need.

and I was just thinking the other day how several of my socks are wearing thin ...

Also, had a great little chat with Nancie Rowe-Janitz today. Nancie is the owner of ScrapArtist.com and is designing some very cool "exclusive" printables for my September project in Have More FUN. We will be using an ABSOLUTELY adorable, gated album from Fancy Pants (which Nancie also designed.) Anyway, in talking to Nancie today I understand now, just how easy it will be for both traditional or digital scrapbookers embrace this album concept and follow along. Traditional scrappers will have downloads to print and digital gals will get a deal on kits that coordinate!!

the ticket to summer

So, I figured out summer just in time (as in yesterday morning.) Our plan this year is much less activity oriented than last summer and that is simply because my children are very spread out. Clark at 15 wants to spend his free time in very different ways than Taft (7) and hello, Addie! I am taking Thursdays off and will be scheduling things to do with the "older" vs. "younger" kids and also involving them in projects around the house (painting bedrooms, etc..) Clark has driver's ed through June, Trey has theater and dance classes and camps in July and I'm still working on some stuff for Chase. Taft is just happy with play dates and projects (which, btw, have you seen the dollar section at Target recently?)

Ticket

In any case, here's what I'm calling "The Ticket to Summer" ...

Basically, you can earn one ticket by:

Reading, playing the piano, or playing with Addie for 30 minutes
Writing a good old-fashioned letter
Doing an extra job for Mom

You can earn two tickets by:

Getting up early (on your own) to study scriptures and other good books with mom
Making cookies/brownies or other treat and cleaning up (with my approval)
Doing two loads of laundry (with help)
Fixing dinner (with my approval)

You can earn a BONUS ticket by doing everything on Dad's list by 10:00 am

This is my contribution to supporting Geof in his academic assignments, that include math, reading, writing and piano -- and I want to help the boys understand that if they get up and get going, then can be totally FREE by 10:00 am (it's that stop procrastinating and get to work principle)

So, the fun part ... you get to redeem your tickets!

Stay up past 9:00 (Clark exempt) -- 1 Ticket
Play with a friend --  3 Tickets (anytime, anywhere .. if you have the tickets!)
Sleep over -- 5 Tickets
$5.00 to do something fun (lunch, movie, ice-cream) -- 3 Tickets

Tickets can only be given by Mom or Jenna and must be marked with a specific color and dated. The best part of all (for boys who care) is that redeemed tickets are worth extra money for school shopping days in August. So, if you are into name-brand stuff, you can upgrade the jeans M&D would buy you by using redeemed tickets!!  Pretty cool, eh?

Speaking of my sweet Jenna -- guess who got engaged on Friday night?
When you get a free minute, you can read all about it here, on her new blog!
We are so happy for her (sad for us) but happy for her!!!

Thoughts on intentional imperfection and answers to more Photo Freedom questions coming soon!

Father's Day and a Piggy Tales SNEAK PEAK

Good Monday morning to you!

It's the first day of summer here, meaning the first day that I don't need to get kids up and ready and out the door and I'm so loving it!!!!!

Yesterday was an awesome day. We celebrated our Dad, attended church, enjoyed sunshine and a walk along the river with our good friends, the Jensens. As I drifted off to sleep, which takes all but 3 1/2 minutes, I had an amazing sense of overwhelming satisfaction -- life is so good.

So, this morning I get to share what I created for Geof for Father's Day and I also get to give you a sneak peak at a very cool, new interactive album debuting at summer CHA.

Pt_cover

This is the Piggy Tales Drawbridge Book, a 6x6 white boardbook with four flaps that fold out to reveal hidden photos and/or journaling, with extra space built into the spine, so you can include dimensional extras and still close the album when you're done -- see, very cool!

You can see more below, but please be sure to check out three other Drawbridge creations, by upcoming Big Picture Scrapbooking teachers ...

Lisa Damrosch (Product Playground 2)
Amy Sorenson (Write NOW!)
Lisa Day (Perpetual Happiness)

I love products that inspire a story -- and that is just what this album did for me ...

and the KIT goes to ...

Jennie B, who posted Friday at 9:36 PM

I already ordered a kit for myself but would love to give one to a co-worker with 3 children and no time to scrap. I'm planning on having a scrap retreat weekend at my home this summer and will have the blessing of pampering two dear friends.

I love that she is going to give the kit to her friend and open her home for a retreat this summer.
Wow.

email me, Jennie--with your address please!

since we now have Great Harvest at the bottom of the hill. I came up with a new "last day" tradition. We walk to the bakery and everyone gets a "smart cookie" -- or in this case a smart peanut butter bar.
Had to explain the idiom, when Taft asked, "are their dumb cookies too mom?"

Off to jog in the sunshine!

Sweetwater Retreat and my KOTM

So, I'm curious how many of you have ever participated in a scrapbooking retreat?

Now, by retreat I mean you've gone away to some off-the-beaten-path place that feels oddly like home (without the mess) and so comfortable you can stay in your jammies all day, or at least until after someone else fixes your breakfast and lunch -- and if you eat anything like me, the more appropriate phrase is actually "until after someone caters your meals" which suggests something beyond a costco chocolate shake, two handfuls of mixed nuts and a package of fruit snacks (breakfast and lunch yesterday)

I'll cut to the chase ...

Sweetwaterlogo_2

Tn_sweetwater138

Simple Scrapbooks editors Wendy Smedley and Angie Lucas just got back from a very relaxing and productive retreat at the Sweetwater House in a quaint little town in Colorado. Details and pictures are posted on Angie’s blog and there are six more "SIMPLE" weekends planned with our top photographers and designers. You can peruse the schedule and make reservations here.

The BEST NEWS! Sweetwater will be offering a $50 discount if you book one of the Simple-hosted weekends by Monday, June 16, 2008 -- that would be this coming Monday. So, I suggest you be really nice to dad and/or hubby on Sunday and then schedule a get-a-way on Monday -- and I'm serious, if you haven't planned some "me time" this summer, the very least you could do is click here and  learn more!

I've been to two similar retreats and have loved every productive and pampered minute. If you have NOT yet been so lucky, leave a comment and I'm going to (sorry, no free trips to Sweetwater) send you one of my A Penny For Your Thoughts, Kits -- I got the complete kit in the mail today and I LOVE it. I hadn't yet seen the penny tin that holds the finished pages and it's just too cute for words. And there is more GOOD NEWS -- you can now purchase my special Projects Now class at Big Picture Scrapbooking. You still need the kit to complete the project, but this may make the purchasing less confusing. For those of you that have already purchased the kit + class option on the KOTM website, this is what will be arriving on your doorstop very soon ..

Img_0863

Notice, there is a big sticker on the top of the box. This sticker features a unique access code (I wiped the code of this picture, so I could send this to some lucky blog reader!) -- anyway, use this code to gain access to the classroom, here. Inside the box ... is everything  you need to create one of the coolest projects you'll ever make (not sure how I can guarantee this, but I believe it!)

Img_0864

Just think, what a cool addition this would be to a shelf in the den or family room, or dad's office -- compact, engaging and full of telling connections. I guess one could say, it's priceless (I couldn't resist)

If you've never been to a retreat, you could win this kit and then perhaps invite several friends and make your own weekend get-a-way!!

Happy Friday.

back in the saddle.

I hope.
I had such an wonderful experience on Friday. I traveled to a retail store, Treasured Memories in Oak Park, CA. Molly, a graduate of Library of Memories 2007 put together a support group of current LOMers centered at the store. They scheduled "stuffing parties" (think storage binders) and met on several occasions to simply talk in person about the lessons and their progress -- and let's be honest, they helped each other through the tough spots and worked through the frustrations and obstacles too!
Img_3569_2
I knew it would be enjoyable, but I vastly underestimated the thrill of meeting students face to face and getting to hang out with them. They created a photo-album scrapbook for me that tucks inside an adorable little purse. I promise to tell you more later.

On my way home I was attacked by a killer virus -- left me so foggy I even missed my flight home.
I read the book, Creating a Charmed Life on the way home. Nancy (Cloud 9 Design) sent it to me, and I LOVE it. If you've read it, leave a comment -- in my opinion, this is one that every woman should have on or near her nightstand, quick uplifting, validating read.
Book
and the cute mug -- from Nancy too.
Thanks my friend.

all is well.

The Story

  • It was 1997. I was living in Salt Lake City, Utah. I telephoned a neighbor, who I was just getting to know. Her husband answered, I said "Hello, is so-and-so there?" He replied with the expected "Just a moment please" followed by an unexpected comment to his wife "Honey, it's that woman who's altogether too happy!"
